Novel Products Project

About the project

This project is conducted by the Laboratory of Lifestyle Research (Department of Medical Epidemiology), of the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, Milan, Italy. The project is financially supported by the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC) within the AIRC Investigator Grant (IG) 2021 n. 25987.

The main aim of this project is to set up large cohorts of Italian adults to investigate several safety and public health outcomes related to tobacco control and cancer prevention, including:
i. The consequences of the use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products on conventional cigarette use among adult never, current and former smokers in Italy;
ii. The net-benefit of novel (tobacco) product use from a public health perspective in Italy;
iii. Medium- and long-term effects of exclusive or combined use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and HTPs on incidence (and mortality) of cancer and other smoking-related chronic conditions in Lombardy.

Moreover, two systematic reviews of the literature will assess the extent of the potential bias due to the conflict of interest in the currently available scientific literature on electronic cigarettes and HTPs.
